Patty with a WhY
A Play About Adulting as a Third Culture Kid
Written & Performed by Patty Klinpibul
Dramaturgy & Directed by Emily Duncan
Lost in a Thai market. Lost in my TCK mind.
Born in Thailand, raised in Malaysia and Egypt, a Dunedin-based Third Culture Kid (TCK) in her 20s revisits the people and places she’s supposed to call home.
Developed for the 2023 Ōtepoti Theatre Lab Playwrights Programme, ‘Patty with a WhY’ is a semi-autobiographical monologue written and performed by Patty Klinpibul. With dramaturg and director Emily Duncan, Patty has expanded the work into her debut full-length solo show, which she has staged in Ōtepoti Dunedin and Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland in 2024.
Whether or not you identify as a TCK, ‘Patty with a WhY’ promises a world of wonders, laughter, a few tears, and hopefully some answers for your own WhYs.
CW: This play includes discussion of mental health.
